Some reflections on my experience of being a silversmith

Being a silversmith isn’t easy. It takes hours of beating, planishing and polishing to shape metal, however it’s absolutely worth it! The real reward is being able to go on a creative and collaborative journey with my clients. I find it a real joy to work with my clients and draw out their ideas and concepts, create sketches and models and finally present them with a finished piece that hopefully realises or even goes beyond their original vision.

I feel privileged to be working with silver; a precious material that has been used for thousands of years to create works of art. The opportunity to shape and create objects that people can enjoy and that will go on to outlast my lifetime is a tremendous honour and responsibility.

If water is the greatest thing for a thirsty man; a plain white piece of paper, for a writer, a poet, a composer; the greatest thing for a silversmith is a fresh sheet of silver. The possibilities for me at this moment are truly endless with just a little sprinkling of … trepidation!
